Many people think the Aztek is hideous. I don't think it's that bad. I give them credit for trying something new, and for sorta being the first crossover, a segment which has, for better or worse, really taken off. The Aztek was based on the GM minivans. So would it have been forgivable if it had kept the Montana's front face? I opened up ye olde Photoshoppe and started to graft Montana face onto the Aztek. I was having a hard time finding two good images of each to work with in terms of angles, lighting, and color. I mentioned to a friend what I was working on, and he was able to pull it off quicker than I could. So here is his Photoshop interpretation of my idea to keep the minivan front clip on the Aztek. Probably would look better if the whole car had the bronze 2nd color for the bottom half.

I think we can all agree that the AMC Eagle was the first crossover.

That doesn't help that much. However, it is apparently very adept at serving as a Meth Maker's support vehicle:

I'd rather beat little children than drive an Aztec.

Ugly, sure. But like you said it did start a trend and was very capable

To me, it's the rear end that is hideous. The front end is acceptable to me.

It does look a bit better, sort of like a baby Isuzu Ascender, and better than the Montana "donor" or the SV6 sequel. Try an Ascender front end, or at least the headlamps and bumper, maybe?
your photoshop skills outclass my own; can you put the face of the new Cherokee (I'm calling it the Cher-yuck-ee) on the Aztek?

A crossover to me is a SUV style body riding on a car based platform. I would say the Eagle is more of a 4wd wagon than a crossover. A car body with a more truck/SUV like chassis.

You might be looking at the 1977 Matra Rancho then. Offroad body style, yet FWD and based on a hatchback (Simca 1100) from the late 60s.

I'm not really following. My recollection of things is, the Toyota Rav4 was one of the first crossovers. While the Aztec may have been on of first American crossovers, the Buick Rendezvous that followed immediately afterward was the first successful model of the platform, singlhandedly saving the manufacturing plant that produced the Aztec. Even the Saturn Vue was released at about the same time, was more attractive and more successful.

It's apparently not a new idea. The Aztek was probably the first crossover to serve as a replacement for/alternative to soon to be phased out minivans. And like you said, the Vue and Rendezvous soon followed. And now we have Explorer/MKT, Traverse/Acadia, Journey, Santa Fe, Tucson, Pilot/Ridgeline and others.
